Harwich 78 - 10 Tied with Maldon 78 - 7 In a close and exciting game, Maldon, who were without three regular bowlers could not quite finish the Harwich tail before running out of regular bowlers, giving the Home side a chance to put a defendable total on the scoreboard. Lindsay Devoil (10) and Kate Bladon (9) assisted by 'extras' (36!) gave the home side a chance. Excellent bowling from the Ruth Smith (13 for Three) saw her get the wickets she deserved. The Maldon reply started well with a good opening stand but Sophie Southgate (9 for Two) weighed in with quick wickets, one from each end. The catch of the season at first slip was taken by Nimmons sending back a very unlucky Holly Scrivener(3). The catch which was off an edge was taken with a full length dive two inches off the ground. (Seen to be believed)! Maldon needed 10 off the last over and reduced it to 3 off the last ball. Smith, who had returned at the fall of the last Maldon wicket, crashed the ball through the leg side for 2 but couldn't get back for the third run. Again the game was played in excellent spirit and enjoyed by all with a fair result.Colchester bt Police by default. Reports for 29th. July Colchester 87 - 5 bt Maldon 56 - 8 by 31 runs. Colchester continue their unbeaten run with another comfortable victory accompanied by the background music of Beatles and Stones tunes from Friday night's Proms in the Park. Laura Thoroughgood (13 for One), Ruth Smith(16 for One), and Jenny Eva(22 for One) were the Maldon wicket takers. Maldon, chasing a modest 87 were unable to maintain momentum to overhaul the Colchester score due to accurate bowling and some excellent fielding by Colchester with two good catches from Jenny Grinter kept the score rate down. Holly Scrivener (24) held the Maldon response together until she was unlucky to be bowled by Sue Davies (13 for One), a much needed wicket which slowed Maldon down. Charlotte Mower (9 for Three), Kate Golding (9 for Two) and Janet Austin (7 for One) were the pick of the Colchester bowlers.Eight Ash Green bt Harwich by default Gt Waltham bt Police by default. For Colchester bowlers Janet Austin (15 for three) and Kate Golding (15 for One) both off 4 overs were the wicket takers. The Colchester reply started very slowly, and after 10 overs had made little impact on the Abberton total with the top order running themselves out. The arrival at the wicket of Kara Toleman (29Retired) scored in double quick time, including a huge 6 over the longest boundary gave Colchester much needed impetus. Kate Golding (21Not Out) and Francis Mower (19) were the other scorers leading Colchester to victory in the penultimate over. For Abberton, Sally Cade (9 for 0) maintained her record as an economical bowler. Maldon lost to Gt. Waltham by default Eight Ash Green bt Police by default
Reports for 1st. & 3rd. July Abberton 71 - 3 bt Maldon 70 - 6 by 7 wickets. Batting first Maldon found runs difficult to get against the accurate bowling of Michelle Snow (5 for Three) and Chris Pettman (6 for Two) both off 4 overs. Only Laura Thorogood (16), Megan Creasy (9) and Jan Eva (7) defied the bowlers as Maldon edged to 70 off their allotted 20 overs. Despite loosing an early wicket, Abberton scored rapidly with Amy Finbow (15) and Laura Struth (18) leading the way as they reached their target in the eleventh over. Holly Scrivener (7 for One) and Eva (15 for One) were the Maldon bowlers of note. Eight Ash Green 126 - 4 bt Gt Waltham 101 - 4 by 25 runs. With two of the Gt Waltham players arrival delayed by accidents on the M25, Eight Ash Green batted first and took full advantage of gaps in the Gt Waltham field with Di Passfield (27 retired), Patsie Mayle (28 retired) and Chris Cunningham (15) striking the ball to all parts complemented by late flurry from Sue Lee (16 Not out), saw the home side reach 126 off their 20 overs. June Eight Ash Green 79 - 4 bt Maldon 78 - 3 by 6 wickets Maldon batted first on a rather damp pitch and wet outfield that made fast scoring very difficult. Scoring steadily, openers Jen Eva (10) and Debbie Guppy (18) supported by hard hitting Holly Scrivener (28Ret) maintained a reasonable rate for the conditions. The economical Debbie Aylward(5 for 0) and Chris Jones (12 for Two), both off 4 overs, slowed the rate as the skies darkened and rain began to fall, Maldon reached 78 for 3 off their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Eight Ash Green raced away until, under the now steady rain, the players sought the shelter of the pavilion. After some delay and the liberal use of sawdust play recommenced in much better light but on a very wet pitch making holding the ball very difficult. Openers Cheryl Pinch (20) and Di Passfield (12) were soon out leaving Sue Lee (16) and Chris Cunningham(13) to take up the chase. Megan Creasy (10 for One) and Eva (18 for One) were the best of the Maldon bowlers as Eight Ash Green edged home. Both teams need congratulating on their approach to the game under such trying conditions. Harwich 77 - 10 lost to Colchester 78 - 8 by 2 wickets Harwich opened batting well with Sophie Southgate (27No) and A Cook (17) keeping Colchester on the back foot, but steady accurate bowling from M Ben (4 for Two), Di Lavender (19 for Four) and Janet Austin (19 for Three) backed up by some good fielding, saw the tail disintegrate restricting Harwich to 78 off 17 overs. Returning to the fray after retiring, Southgate ran out of partners and was unable to add to her retired score. Harwich took the field in a steady drizzle. Again at first the bowlers had the upper hand with Cook (8 for Two) and Southgate (20 for Three) reducing Colchester to 38 -6 despite the efforts of Jenny Grinter (11) and Kate Golding (22). Unfortunately towards the end the ball became very slippery and the home bowlers couldn't keep their grip giving away 30 in extras. Having sent back 8 of the Colchester players Harwich celebrated the ninth wicket with Cook bowling young Salthouse, but unfortunately seeing that the square leg umpire had given a 'No Ball' through height bringing the celebrations to an abrupt end. Young Salthouse (0No) and Austin (4No) saw the league leaders through without further scares. This was an excellent game and both sides and umpires deserve great credit playing through horrible conditions to get a result. Gt. Frances Mower (25Ret), Danielle Lavender (17) and Hattie Warren (15) until caught by Helen Barnes taking a high and difficult catch - definitely the catch of the day. Michelle Mauger (10 for 1) and Nicky Gander (31 for 1) were the Police wicket takers. Maldon 27 - 1 bt Harwich 24 - 10 by 9 wickets. After winning the toss, Maldon invited Harwich to bat first. It very soon proved to be the correct decision, even though it meant they were fielding in excessive heat! Maldon's bowlers leapt into action and Harwich had to watch as their wickets tumbled, one after the other, in the onslaught. A. Cook (5) and S Brooks (4) being Harwich's best bats. Emily Broadhurst (5 for 4), Holly Scrivener (3 for 2) and Jen Eva (6 for 1) were Maldon's demon wicket takers (using only 8.4 of the allotted 20 overs) and were more than ably supported by their team mates in the field. Harwich knew they faced an uphill struggle and despite putting on a brave effort could not keep the Maldon batting down, with a Cook (12 for 1) taking the only Maldon wicket to fall. Francis Mower (21 not out) and Danielle Lavender (25Ret) saw the visitors to victory in the sixteenth over.
