BEAUMONT SEYMOUR NORTH EAST ESSEX WOMEN’S LEAGUE

MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING HELD TUESDAY 1 APRIL 2003.

Present: Barry RUDLIN (Chairman), Kim SPAIN (Treasurer / Abberton), Roy CLARK (Secretary / Police), Dave JONES (Fixtures / Results Secretary), Nicola GRIGGS (Wivenhoe), Claire (Wivenhoe), Carole WARREN (Colchester), Ray BLACK (Copford), Cheryl PINCH (Eight Ash Green). Also present: Rebecca CLOUT (Great Waltham), Dave TINGLEY and Clive EARLEY (District Board).

Apologies for absence: Sally CADE, Sue DAVIES and Michelle SNOW.

Minutes of Committee Meeting 09.12.2002: These were agreed a true record.

Great Waltham: Barry RUDLIN welcomed Rebecca CLOUT to the meeting as a representative of Great Waltham who had expressed an interest in joining our league. There was a general discussion regarding possibility of problems traveling to Great Waltham for away matches to arrive in time to start at 18:30 hours. With the light not being so good early season it was felt that a late start might be a problem. A suggested possible solution was to  move the first 2 or 3 fixtures so that Great Waltham played away it being easier for them to travel to the Colchester area than for other teams to travel the opposite way on the A12. If Great Waltham were to join the league, they would fill the slots currently marked as  “bye” in the provisional fixture list.

A vote was then held as to whether to admit Great Waltham to the league. The vote was unanimous in favour of admission.

Problems with fixtures: Nicola GRIGGS stated that Wivenhoe have a problem with their fixture against Copford on 13th June 2003 because one of the team are getting married and the whole team will be away that weekend. It was agreed by the meeting that the two teams could negotiate a mutually suitable alternative date. It was further agreed that if any team has a problem with any fixture they have until 18th April 2003 to inform Dave JONES (Fixtures / Results Secretary).

Funding: Barry RUDLIN stated he had received a cheque from the County for £424:00 and a cheque from Colchester Sports Council for £500:00. In addition, our application to Sports Awards For All (lottery funding) for money to finance coaching and nets etc for youth cricket had met with success in the form of a cheque for £4,200:00. Mr TINGLEY (District Board) mentioned that there is a void in coaching for youth cricket in this area. Barry stated it was the intention of the league to help with the cost of level one coaching courses for up to twelve (12) members of the league so that next year the league is self-sufficient in terms of coaches. He envisaged the league paying 75% of the cost of the course for each of the twelve (12) candidates. The cost of a course is approximately £100 so those attending would have to pay about £25 themselves. NOMINATIONS for persons to attend the level one coaching course to Roy CLARK by 15 May 2003 please.

Other money would be available to pay for the cost of the Tuesday evening coaching sessions commencing 29th April at Homewood House.

Ray BLACK suggested using some of the money to encourage youth cricket by holding a Kwik Kricket tournament in local primary schools.

Barry suggested forming a small sub-committee to look at how best to spend the money to encourage youth cricket in local schools and the local area generally.

Clive EARLEY said that from his experience clubs going into the schools was the best way. Barry suggested that perhaps then Sally CADE and others who qualify / are qualified as coaches could get into the local schools. The league could pay expenses if they had to take time off work to do so.

It was agreed to form a youth cricket sub committee consisting of Ray BLACK, Sally CADE, and Carole WARREN. Clive EARLEY said he would assist where possible.

Kite Mark Standard:  Mr TINGLEY (District Board) said that over the next five (5) years a Kite Mark Standard would be introduced to cricket at all levels. It is a quality control standard and it will effect all applications for loans / finance, first aid, etc. Prospective new players looking for a club will only be advised to join one that is accredited under the Kite Mark Standard scheme. He said that there was no doubt that it would effect ladies cricket at some point in the future.

Winter indoor cricket / coaching 2003/4: It was generally agreed that the Philip Morant School was not a particularly good facility for indoor cricket. There was discussion about the merits of various venues including Manningtree, Honeywood School and Highwoods. It was agreed that Barry RUDLIN would contact Highwoods and Ray BLACK would contact both Manningtree and Honeywood School. Cheryl PINCH would look at other alternative venues.

Most present agreed that a Friday evening was not necessarily the best time / day. It was agreed that Sunday mornings were probably more suitable. Barry suggested booking a three (3) or four (4) hour slot and having three teams play three games each week.

Kit / equipment: Barry RUDLIN suggested buying helmets in a selection of sizes. Ray BLACK suggested making a selection available for the indoor cricket. It was agreed to buy three (3) of each size of helmet (Large, Medium and Small) for shared use.

Training of umpires and scorers: Roy CLARK suggested training for umpires and scorers. Barry RUDLIN said he had already approached Malcolm DAVIES to arrange an evening in late April for an input on umpiring. A discussion followed over who could run a similar seminar for scorers.

UMPIRING SEMINAR: Wednesday 23rd April 2003 commencing 19:30 hours at Wivenhoe Cricket Club.

SCORERS SEMINAR: Wednesday 7th May 2003 commencing 19:30 hours at Colchester & NEE Cricket Club (Castle Park).

Charges to clubs:

Coaching, Friday eves at Philip Morant            £25:00

Annual subscription to the league                  £10:00     Total payable per club:                                £35:00

Note: no charge for match balls this year.

Outdoor coaching: Tuesdays at 18:00 at Homewood House commencing Tuesday 29th April 2003 for twelve (12) weeks. There are four (4) outdoor nets. Clive EARLEY (and others) will be on hand to offer coaching. In the event of bad weather, phone Clive on 07931 761274 to check if it is to be called off.

The cost to the league of these nets is £1100. It was agreed that all those attending would be asked to contribute £1:00 per head to assist with the costs.

Open Day:  The open day is planned for Sunday 4th May 2003 from 14:00 to 17:00 at Abberton Cricket Club. The idea is to encourage youngsters along to see what cricket is about, give it a try and perhaps join one of the league teams. It was suggested that the best ways to advertise the event was through local papers, local radio and through schools. Roy CLARK undertook to speak to the press and radio. Ray BLACK and Cheryl PINCH to inform the schools.

Dutch Cricket: Carole WARREN informed the meeting that a Dutch cricket team are coming to the area on 25 April. They will be playing a 20 over game against Colchester on the Friday evening but are looking for another game on Sunday 27 April of 30 or 40 overs duration. Both Wivenhoe and Great Waltham offered the use of their pitches. It was suggested that Carole WARREN try to arrange a representative side from the league to play them.

  Roy CLARK,

Honorary Secretary.
