Final

Abberton 105 for 6 bt Eight Ash Green 97 for 9 by 8 runs

Batting first, Abberton started in determined fashion with Amy Finbow (12) and Helen Barnes (9) scoring at over five an over. The stylish Hannah Jeffery (27 retired) was soon joined by Michelle Snow (25 retired) and together punished the Green bowlers with some hard hit boundaries, riding their luck with some difficult dropped catches. With their retirements, the green bowlers started to regain control with Debbie Aylward (9 for Two) and Chris Jones (8 for One) limiting the runs in the final five overs. Jamie Newstead (30 for Two) conceded only eight runs off her first two overs by Jeffery severely punished the next two.

In reply, Eight Ash Green found runs hard to score against the fast accurate bowling of Jeffery (14 for One0 and Max Harris (12 for One) quickly falling behind the rate with only Jamie Newstead (12) able to cope. Helen Barnes (14 for Two) and Hannah Porter (7 for two) maintained the pressure until Chris Cunningham (12) began the fight back. Nikki Brown (15) and Karen Dredge (17) put the defending Champions in with a chance ably supported by Chris Jones (14 not out). With fifteen required off the last two overs, Min Patel (25 for One) conceded only three, including the wicket of Dredge, in her last over.  Michelle Snow (25 for One) bowled the last over to Jones, only six runs were conceded giving Abberton a deserved victory by eight runs.

3rd. Place Play-Off

Kelvedon & Feering 104 for 4 bt Woodham Mortimer 103 for 6 by 6 wickets.

The 3rd place final was always going to be tight as the 2 teams had met twice before this season with Woodham winning but by very close margins on both occassions. The opening partnership for woodham saw them put on 34 in 6 overs when Woodham lost their 1st wkt. (S.Smith for 12) This brought Victoria Brown to the crease who had scored lots of runs in the previous games. However, Butcher (1-23) bowled her, 1st ball which with Laura Thorogood retiring slowed Woodhams run gathering. A very tight spell of bowling from Moore (1-6 off 4 overs) coupled with wickets falling just as some momentum was being regained meant that Kelvedon restricted Woodham to ONLY 103 when 130 looked more likely earlier on. Kelvedon's response was sound but not spectacular as the openers got to 31 off 8 overs. This was due to R. Smith(0-14) and Scrivener (0-16) bowling a very tight and economical opening spell. A change of bowling brought immidiate success as Grace Melvish got first Yates and then the d!
angerous Lees in her first over. 35 for 2 off 9 overs didn't look good for Kelvedon. Moore pushed a few around for 7 and the Johnson came in. She then set about the Woodham bowling. Getting 24 in 20 balls. Just as it seemed she would see Kelvedon home she went for one too many big hits and was bowled by Brown. Kelvedon required 4 off the last over with new bat Cowell facing. The first 4 balls went down as dots. 3 off 2. Cowell at last connected with a thick edge and a quick run was had. Last ball and Charlie Clark-Parkinson drove the ball hard towards cover a single, but with all the pressure a missfield occured and with Cowell and Clark-Parkinson always going for 2 scampered home with inches to spare. A fantastic end to a high quality game of cricket.

A quickfire innings from Chris Jones (16) helped push the score along. Aylward returned in the final over and was the last person out going for a suicidal second run.

The Maldon openers E Penketh and N Hadfield kept up with the run rate and scored well until N Hadfield was run out.  The weather was closing in and conditions were poor however the Maldon team batted on determined to keep up with the asking rate  Wickets were lost quickly with only E Penketh able to score runs until R Digweed came to the crease.  The pair batted well together but heavy rain hampered the batting side and after several good shots R Digweed was caught and E Penketh retired not out.  The fast Kelvedon bowling was too much for the tail enders and E Penketh returned to the crease with Di Furnival who batted well for her 6 not out.  Unfortunately E Penketh was run out while trying to retain the strike and the match was won by Kelvedon.

Michelle Mauger (8) was brilliantly caught down the leg side by wicket keeper Passfield off the bowling of Chris Jones (7 for Two). Fine spells from Michelle Snow (14 for Two) and Helen Barnes (9 for Two) left the Sudbury middle order with too much to do falling short by just 17 runs.

Kelvedon & Feering 104 for 7 (20 points) bt v Old Chelmsfordians 46 for 10 (3 points) by 58 runs

Latimer 2-11 and Bailey 3-19 kept taking wickets, but Moore 26no with support from the tail gave KFCC a respectable finishing total of 104. In reply OCs lost a wicket with the 1st ball and with some very consistant bowling from Felstead 2-5, Cowell 2-8 and the rest of the KFCC attack resulted in them losing 6 quick wickets. Bell (14) put up some resistance but she didn't get any real support and OCs innings was over when she was the last bat out. Giving KFCC a deserved 58 run win

Woodham Mortimer 94 for 6 (5 points) lost to Maldon 95 for 3 (20 points) by 7 wickets

N Hadfield (16 for One) bowled opener Carole Gillies (0), Claire Bulman (8) followed then Smith (5) was run out. The wickets continued to fall steadily, however an excellent knock by Laura Throrgood (28 retired) and cameos from Grace Meluish (5 not out) and Rebecca Thorogood (6 not out) at the end of the innings got Woodham to a reasonable score of 94.
Emily Penketh (26 retired) and Hadfield (11) opened for Maldon and got them off to a cracking start before Hadfield was run out. M Dames (25 retired) carried on the mood. A very tight spell of bowling by Michelle Snow coming on at first change (4 overs,1 mdn,6 runs,4 wkts) ended the chase leaving the three young players to see out the 20 overs with the help of the sporting Abberton attack. once again Alice Antliff batted well and got 5 well deserved runs

Woodham opened their innings and lost a very quick wicket. However, this brought together L. Thorogood and S. Smith who put on a 50 run partnership in 10 overs. When smith retired the run rate slowed a little but Woodham kept up the pressure to finish on a challenging 98 for 4. Butcher and Moore opened for KFCC and proceeded untroubled until an outstanding piece of fielding by S. Smith who threw down the one stump she could see to run Moore out. Lees and then Felsted smashed 40 runs between them in very quick time although both lost their wickets to good catches and consistent bowling. However, KFCC at 10 overs were on 63 for 3 and in control. Woodham then tightened the screw with excellent bowling from S. Smith (3-28) and H. Thorogood (1-14) and with the retirement of Butcher, who had batted thoughtfully, Kelvedon's run rate slowed. With this pressure Kelvedon lost wickets reguarly, they were also hampered by injuries which caused both batters at one point to have runners! !
Even the return of Butcher wasn't enough to get the required score. Woodham eventually ran out worthy winners at the end by 13 runs.

In reply Harwich were always under pressure after losing wkts reguarly. Southgate(9)worked hard to push the score on, but tight bowling, and good fielding built the pressure which started to lead to more wickets falling. Johnson with (4-5) did most of the damage but she was ably supported by Michie (1-8) and Dunlop (1-9. However with 4 overs to go all looked over but the U11 pairing of Antliff and Dixon applied themselves and slowly accumilated runs putting on 14 runs over 5 overs and with Kelvedon only able to break the partnership on the ve!
ry last ball of the game. This gave Kelvedon a deserved victory by 51 runs.

The weather was fine, no rain on the horizon, Waltham won the toss and put Woodham in to bat. Woodham got off to a flying start with Laura striking the ball extremely well and quickly retiring.  Shirley and Vicki put up a great partnership, running the singles hard and forever putting Waltham under pressure.  Eventuyally Waltham broke the partnership with a great piece of fielding.  Vicki also had a great innings and retired, and then Debbie and Audrey saw the overs out.  Waltham went in to chase 99, Mary and Beck set themselves up, running some quick singles, Laura Thorogood made the first break through by bowling Mary out for just 11.  Waltham's run rate was a little slow untill Fran came in at number 5 and quickly hit three fours on the trot, this soon picked Waltham's run rate up.  But Vicki Brown was Woodham's biggest asset who took three amazing cathces, which soon put Waltham on the back foot.  But all was not lost, Nacy came in and stood her ground with some big hits!
as well as striking up some partnerships lower down the order.  Eventually Waltham run out of options and Alex, at only 10 years old came in at number 11 with 5 runs to win.  Unfortunatley, Waltham were unable to see it home and lost by only 4 runs.

Undaunted, Helen Barnes (25 retired) and Hilary Jeffrey (10) moved the score rapidly on. A final flurry from Max Harris (21 not out) pushed the Abberton score to 91 from their allotted overs. The accurate bowling of Emma O'Hara (10 for one) and Alison Smith (9 for 0), both off four kept the level of scoring down.

In reply, Sudbury lost their openers quickly but a spirited fight back from Emma O'Hara (22) and Lucy Philip (15) put the home side in with a chance. With their demise, a mid order collapse followed under the accurate bowling of Helen Porter (7 for Three), Michelle Evans (17 for two) and Min Patel (10 for one), leaving the home side well short at the end.

Woodham Mortimer 53 for 5  (20 points) bt Kelvedon & Feering 52 for 10 (2 points)  by 1 run

On a damp pitch Woodham were put into bat. Smith & Thorogood put on 17 for the first wicket but conditions were dictating a very slow scroring rate. Brown came in and scored 14 hitting 2 fours, no mean achievement! Woodham managed to get to 53 for 5 after a good partnership late in the innings between Mitchell and Gillies . Kelvedon came in to bat and got off to a shaky start losing both openers early on. Felsted and Stringer steadied the ship. Both however were bowled by H Thorogood. Lees then came in and scored 21 a great innings on this wicket and was caught by a very good catch by Brown. By this time the match was very tense as Kelvedon were keeping up with the run rate but Woodham were getting wickets. Clake-Parkinson was then run out, Johnson then must have thought she had scored the winning runs only to be thwarted by a stunning catch by Scriviner, this tilted the balance in Woodhams favour leaving two runs needed off the last ball with a new batsman at the crease, who was subsequently run out. What a thriller!!

With Old Chelmsfordians hosting Colchester for this friendly, Latimer once again lost the toss and the OC's were put in to bat.  Bell and Latimer were the first pairing, and Latimer stayed true to recent form and was quickly run out.  The second wicket fell almost as quickly and Letts stepped up to the crease.  The run rate increased dramatically and the OC's had a memorable first - a player had to retire on reaching the magical 25!  Unfortunately, that score could not be repeated and the remaining wickets fell quickly again.  As the OC's could only get 8 players, Colchester very graciously agreed to let two of our ladies bat again, and Bell and Orrell became the final pairing.  Orrell had been dismissed for 0 her first time out, but she wasn't going to let that happen again, and we had another first for the OC's - a 6.  And the final first of the innings - the OC's stayed in for 20 overs.  What a shame this was only a friendly!

Now we had to try and get the bowling up to speed and Latimer was the first up, bowling to Layzell.  Not a very good start, allowing 6 runs from the first over.  Layzell eventually retired on 27, but the OC's didn't let that upset their rythm, with Latimer, Letts and Bell all taking wickets.  There was even a run out - a great stumping by our substitute wicket keeper, Cocklin.  Unfortunately, even a slightly weakened Colchester side proved to be too strong, with Grinter racking up 21 runs, before they eventually declared on 76.

A huge thank you to Colchester for allowing us our two extra batters, and also lending us a player when we were fielding.  And also for putting up with our excessive celebrations when we took wickets - they could probably tell it didn't happen often.

Player of the match for Colchester was Stella Layzell, and OC's player of the match was Kat Letts.

Abberton 115 for 4 (20 points) bt Harwich & Mistley 38 for 8 (2 points) by 77 runs

Batting first, Abberton were soon into their stride with Helen Barnes (26 retired) striking the ball well. The fall of two quick wickets to Michelle Mauger (19 for one) and Felicity Lees (24 for one) halted progress until Michelle Snow ( 25 retired) bosted the scoring rate. A final flurry from Hannah Porter (14 not out) pushed the score to 115 despite the acurate bowling of Beth Antliff (7 for one.

In reply, Harwich & Mistley were immediately in trouble loosing two early wickets. Amy Cook (13) supported by Cath Antony (6) forced Abberton to bowel their full overs although they were never in trouble of loosing. The Abberton attack had a good night wit some extremely accurate bowling wit Min Patel (3 for two) and Max Harris (13 for two) the main wicket takers.

Eight Ash Green 74 for 1 (20 points) bt Colchester & EE 73 for 6 (2 points) by 9 wickets

Batting first, Colchester lost two early wickets but Opener Stella Layzell (16) aided by Kara Toleman (28 not out) put the Eight Ash Green bowlers under pressure with several hard hit boundaries. The retirement of Toleman saw the run rate slow as the Green bowlers regained control. Ruth Salthouse played sensibly to ease the score along. Jamie Newstead (14 for two) and Nikki Brown (15 for two) were the main wicket takers although the accurate bowling of Debbie Green (5 for 0) off 4 overs limited the final Colchester score.

In reply Eight Ash green were quickly into their stride despite the loss of an early wicket. Opener Vanessa Smith (27 retired) smashed the ball to all corners ably supported by the steady play of skipper Debbie Aylward (23 not out). Kara Toleman (16 for one) bowled with considerable pace to take the only wicket. Youngsters Charlotte Mower (5 for 0) and Sophie Croston (4 for 0) bowled economically but could not stop the rampant Green from reaching their target with five overs to spare.

Kelvedon & Feering 91 for 9 (20 points) bt Maldon 88 for 5 (7 points)

A very close game which could have gone either way down till the last ball. Maldon batted and made steady progress but the unfortunate run out of Elisa Penketh and the retirement of N. Hadfield reduced Maldons rate of progress. Lydsey Cowell's 3 wickets at the end of the innings when Maldon wanted to accelerate towards 100+ proved crucial as it again restricted Maldon's run rate. Tia Moore's miserly bowling contributed to Maldon's total of 88.

KFCC opened well against Maldon's opening bowlers but 2 quick wickets put them under pressure. However, Byrony Butcher batted well accumalating runs with Kate Felsted who played her usual attacking game for a stand of 32. When Kate was out KFCC were well up with the run rate but then slowly lost wickets and the tight bowling of E. Penketh as well as the retirement of Butcher meant thet the game was in the balance. When I.Patel took her 3rd wicket of 4, Maldon looked home and dry with Kelvedon still needing 21 runs, also Lyndsey Cowell retired hurt with a back problem, but 4 valuable runs from "rookie" Debbie Scott and Bryony returning meant that KFCC need 11 off the last 2 overs. Maldon then took 2 wickets over the next 9 balls Kelvedon needed 3 off 3 the injured Cowell bravely came back out with a runner. A quick single meant she was facing, 2 from 2. She then pulled the next ball calmly for 4 through mid-wicket to gain a very close KFCC win.

Called off due to wet pitch.

Harwich & Mistley 80 for 2 (3 points) lost to Sudbury 84 for 1 (20 points) by 9 Wickets

Sudbury won the toss and put Harwich & Mistley in on a wet slow wicket. Harwich made a good start and didn't loose amy wickets but with the Sudbury bowling being tight runs were slow in coming. Harwich picked up the pace towards the end of the innings with some good running between Southgate & Martin. All the Sudbury bowlers putting in a very creditable performance. Their feilding was also excellent. Sudbury started as they meant business with some good running between the wickets and some strong hitting. harwich & Mistley did have a success when O'Hara was well taken behind by Housler off Cook. however this only brought in Phillip who made 26 in extremelly quick time with some powerful hitting including a six over mid wicket. On her retirement skipper Allison Allcock played sensibly and with opener kirsty Sloan saw sudbury to victory with overs to spare. For the home side the Antliff twins Beth & Alice both bowled well and made some excellent stops in the field. However the!
season is young & the newly formed harwich 7 Mistley side show a lot of promise
.

Great Waltham 56 for 8 lost to Eight Ash Green 89 for 5 by 33 runs (Friendly)

Batting first, Eight Ash Green lost an early wicket, but the hard hitting Jamie Newstead (26 retired), Sue Miller (15) and Caroline Hill (22 not out) pushed the score along. A fine spell from Nancy Bridge (8 for Two) and Laura Parkin (11 for One) limited the EAG final total.

I response, Gt. Waltham's Becky Clout (8) and Rachel Harper (7) started solidly until the slow bowling of first change Chris Jones (8 for Three) had them both dismissed to magnificent catches. Laura Parkin (20) put up some fine resistance supported by Zoe Brown (6 not out) until the score reached 52 when five wickets fell in quick sucession leaving the home side well short of their target. Venessa Smith (10 for Two) was the other main wicket taker but metion must be made of wicker keeper Di Passfield for a three catch haul behind the stumps.

Old Chelmsfordians 39 for 10 (1 point) lost to Kelvedon & Feering 90 for 2 (20 points) by 51 runs

Kelvedon won the toss and elected to bat.  Their opening batsmen kept up a steady run rate and although the OC's bowling and fielding restricted the big hits, Kelvedon stole a lot of quick singles.  Their top scorers were Bryony Butcher (25), Charlie Clarke-Parkinson (14) and Zoe Wager (12).  OC's fielding had tightened up remarkably compared to their game last week, and more wickets could have been taken, but for a couple of dropped catches.  Several new players were in the team, with Jemma Bell taking a wicket in her first competitive cricket match. The OC's batsmen came up against some pacey bowling from Kelvedon and looked likely to be heading for another low score, until Ally Farrar came to the crease.  She was OC's top scorer with 22 and scored a couple of 4's in only her second competitive game.  Unfortunately, Ally was run out, and although the other batsmen put in a stirling effort, OC's were all out for 39 runs.  A very friendly match, played in great spirit.  Play!
er of the team for Kelvedon was Bryony Butcher.  Player of the team for OC's was shared between Jemma Bell and Ally Farrar.

Maldon 57 for 8 (3 points) lost to Woodham Mortimer 112 for 6 (20 points) by 55 runs

Woodham Mortimer batted well with three batsmen retiring.  Maldon took some good catches especially India Cullerton with a caught and bowled wicket. A catch was missed in the slips when Victoria Brown edged a ball early in her innings off the spin bowling from Elissa and unfortunately for Maldon she went on to score 25.  Accurate bowling from Elissa and Emma helped to keep the runs down and India took two wickets late in the innings.
An early run out put Maldon under pressure however Elissa scored 20 before being given out LBW to the accurate bowling of Clare Bulman who took 4 wickets for 7 runs. Ali Daniels batted well on debut but was caught out before reaching double figures.  Some determined batting from Di Furnival and Sarah Harris ensured that the Maldon side completed the 20 overs.
Player of the team for Woodham Mortimer was Clare Bulman and for Maldon was Sarah Harris.

Abberton 55 for 9 (1 point) lost to Eight Ash Green 56 for 3 (20 points) by 7 wickets

Batting first, Abberton got off to a poor start loosing 3 quick wickets to the accurate bowling of Debbie Aylward (8 for One) and Venessa Smith (8 for Three). Michelle Evans (9), retaliated by striking Chris Jones (14 for Two) for consecutive boundaries before skying a third attempt into the hands of Carolyn Hill. Max Harris (11 not out) marshalled the tail easing the score past fifty. The run rate fell dramatically with the return of Aylward and Smith into the attack, conceding only four runs off the last four overs.

Chasing the relatively low total, Eight Ash Green were soon in trouble loosing their top order in the first three overs with Min Patel (20 for Two) bowling well supported by Max Harris (12 for One). Sue Miller (11 not out) and Skipper Debbie Aylward (15 not out) regrouped gradually gaining the upper hand with some careful and patient batting. Zoe Gould applied pressure conceding only 2 runs from 2 overs supported by Joe Sibley (7 from two) but they were unable to stop the Green passing the target with 7 overs to spare.

Colchester 106 for 3 (20 points) bt Sudbury 105 for 1 (6 points) by 7 wickets

Newcomers Sudbury were put in to bat by Colchester. An early wicket from Kara Tolman gave Colchester the edge and Sudbury's total of 105 was hard fought by the rest of the team. K Sloan retired on 27 and A Alcock retired on 25. Good running between the wickets sometimes caught the Colchester fielders napping. At the change of innings the veterans of the league, Colchester, plodded on to gain victory in the final over. There was good batting from stalwarts Layzell (retired on 27), Mower senior and Grinter; with newcomer Bell putting on a much needed 13. Wide balls were Sudbury's downfall and the eventual winner of the match for Colchester.
Player of the Sudbury Ladies chosen by Colchester is K Sloan
Player of Colchester Ladies chosen by Sudbury is Stella Layzell

Woodham Mortimer 161 for 1 (20 points) bt Old Chelmsfordians 21 for 7 (0 points) by 140 runs

Woodham won the toss and decided to bat. Throgood and Smith got off to a good start with thorogood getting to 25 very quickly, Brown came in next and carried on the good work soon retiring. Smith got there eventually to her 25! Scriviner bowled by a great ball from Bayley. Guppy and King both put in great knocks contributing to a good score. Old chelmsfordians came in with the light fading. Scriviner got a wicket in the first over and from there on in the wickets fell at regular intervals, there was some stubborn resistance from Alice Green. A mention to for a stunning catch taken by Brown to dimiss Liz. Unfortunately Laura Bayley had to retire hurt after being hit on the nose. However the game was played in a great spirit and I would like say that despite the score Old Chelmfordians will without doubt get better as they have a great enthusiasm and a lot of potential and are a good addition to the league.
Old Chelmsfordian lady of the match is Laura Bayley
Woodham Mortimer lady of the match is Victoria Brown

Harwich & Mistley 65 for 5  lost to Maldon 73 for 6  by 8 Runs (Friendly)

Lovely evening with Maldon batting first. H & m started well with tight bowling from Cook & southgate, the latter taking early wickets. The home side gave all their players a bowl leading to a few more extras than normal. The younger members of the team bowling extremelly well. Ellisa Penkith batted very well to reite on a quick fire 25. Maldon setting a good target of 73. H & M struggled against the strong opening attack of Rosie & Nicola, however Cook & Bibby kept the scoreboard ticking. On the dismisal of Cook southgate continued with the runs. Ellisa came into the attck and bowled an extremelly good spell of quick legspin and was unlucky not to gain a wicket. Once Southgate was out and Loiuse Bibby retired on her cricket debut the innings fell away. The Maldon attack keeping a tight line against the inexperienced Harwich & Mistley batting. In the end and gathering dusk harwich fell 8 runs short of the Maldon total. An excellent game played in excellent spirit.
