FRIDAY 3 AUGUST 2007

Woodham Mortimer  90 for 9 (8 points) lost to Colchester & EE 100 for 8 by 10 runs (20 points)

On this last match of the season, Woodham Mortimer Ladies welcomed Colchester to their ground, where 'fans' had turned out in their droves to watch them do battle.  They were not disappointed!
Having won the toss, Woodham put their visitors in to bat.  D Lavender (26 retired) and L Hartley (11) set off at quite a pace with some fine strokes, leaving Woodham's opening bowlers for the day, at a loss! Even with the loss of the first wicket, a lovely catch taken by Shirley Smith off Victoria Brown's bowling, the runs still kept coming with K Toleman (23) now aiding and abetting Lavender.  Once this wicket fell to a fine catch by L Thorogood off the super bowling of Michelle King, one of Woodham's newst recruits, the tide seemed to turn.  In her first stint of bowling in a match, King went on to take 2 more wickets from her four overs for 12 runs. The run rate slowed appreciatively as Woodham's fielding tightened, with Samira making a superb throw in for a brilliant run-out.  The remaining wickets were taken by another new girl, Claire Ross, 2 for 18 and Laura Thorogood, 1 for 11.

Facing a total of 100, Woodham Mortimer felt that a win was well within their grasp.  It was not to be, as it seemed the Batting Gods were looking down on only one player from the team; Debbie Guppy(25), wicket keeper extraordinaire! Coming in at number 6 she batted with aplomb and determination while wickets tumbled.  It was a valiant effort, especially with three ducks on the team, and the score was eventually pushed up to 90 for 9.  A special mention must be made of young Jesse Freeman, who at thirteen played in her first match and showed a lot of potential. She went in to bat, very nervous, facing Essex fast bowler K Toleman. Her batting was smooth and well timed and she scored 7 before being caught by C. Warren. Well done.

Colchester player of the match:         Lorraine Hartley
Woodham Mortimer player of the match:  Debbie Guppy

Gt. Waltham (0 points) lost to Abberton (20 points) by default

Harwich 73 for 9 lost to Maldon 76 for 6 by 3 runs, in a Friendly

A good game with Maldon putting up a score of 76 mainly due to the efforts of the two young Essex players Rosy Digwell & Sarah Harris. Harwich raced away with 39 coming off the first 5 overs. However with cook being bowled & rowland going on the introduction of penkith the rate slowed. However the score got ever closer but with the loss of wickets. Harwich needed 9 off the last 5 overs but with players at the crease who had never played before it was going to be tough. A valient effort was ended when in the dark young Hanna Page was bowled by Randell in the last over.

FRIDAY 13 JULY 2007

Woodham Mortimer 119 for 8 lost to Great Waltham 124 for 1 by 5 runs.

Woodham Mortimer welcomed Gt Waltham to their ground on a cloudy but warm evening. The home team won the toss and invited their visitors to bat first. Waltham's opening pair Mary Shaw (25 Retired) and Rebecca Wilde (25 Retired) soon got their side off to a good start striking freely, leaving Woodham's bowlers wondering what to try next. Granger (26 Retired) and Fran Johnson (23) was well on her way to doing the same when Sam Morling (30 for One), with the last ball of her spell, clean bowled her for 23! Samira (17 for 0) and Laura Thorogood (19 for 0) battled well on a night to have a bat rather than a ball!

With a hefty 125 to win, the biggest target Woodham have had to face to date, Laura Thorogood (27 Retired) and new girl Michelle King(2), got off to a fine start with Thorogood hitting two sixes in the first over. Victoria Brown(18) came in to join the fray and with Thorogood retiring on 27, Brown kept the score ticking over with quick singles coming from the next three Woodham bats. The run rate slowed somewhat and it took the bold efforts of Debbie Guppy (14) and Hayley Thorogood (15) to speed things up again with some fine running between the wickets. Samira(5 not out) and Megan Creasy(9 not out) did their best but in the end Woodham Mortimer could not quite do it and ended 6 runs short of victory! Mary Shaw (19 for Three) and Fran Johnson (14 for Two) followed their batting exploits with fine spells of bowling.

A really excellent and exciting game, well done!

Eight Ash Green 72 for 5 wkts bt Abberton 71 all out by 52 runs.

Electing to bat, Abberton lost an early wicket but the hard hitting Amy Finbow (17) pushed the score along until she was run out by a direct hit from the deep by Rachel Cull. The introduction of Cheryl Pinch (10 for Four) into the attack caused the run rate to slump and the wickets tumbled. Michelle Evans (16) and Jan Dibley (10 Not Out) held the mid order together with some fine play. The dismissal of Evans saw the tail crumble in the final over to the bowling of Caroline Hill (9 for One) and Karen Dredge (4 for One).

In reply, Eight Ash Green were soon in trouble loosing three quick wickets to the excellent bowling of Min Patel (10 for Two) and Michelle Evans (18 for One). Wynn Smith (8) and Rachel Cull (10) steadied the ship but were out in quick succession to rash shots. Debbie Aylward (25 Retired) marshalled the mid order with Chris Cunningham (15) picking off singles to keep above the run rate, reaching the target with over two overs to spare. Jamie Nestea (15 for One) and Evans (18 for One) were economical but could not wrestle control from the home side.

Harwich v Colchester & EE

Stella Lazell (11) and Kate Golding (7) regrouped the mid order with some steady play until a devastating spell from Cheryl Pinch (4 for Four) left Carole Warren (10 Not Out) attempted to marshal an inexperienced tail, finally succumbing in the nineteenth over. Wynn Smith (10 for Three), Chris Jones (8 for One) and Debbie Aylward (18 for One) were the other wicket takers.

FRIDAY 29 JUNE 2007

Woodham Mortimer 76 for 4 lost to Abberton 105 for 5 by 29 runs.

Abberton arrived at Woodham Mortimer's ground, in total disbelief that the game had not been called off! Well, it was raining a little but did clear very quickly. Woodham's skipper won the toss and invited the visitors to bat. Woodham's bowlers were not quite up to scratch, with Ruth Smith the only wicket taker 3 for 14 including one maiden and Holly Scrivener (0 for 12) and Victoria Brown (0 for 13) keeping the bowling fairly tight.  In spite of 2 excellent run-outs and a brilliant catch a piece for Shirley Smith and Claire Ross, Abberton ended on 105 for 5 The home team and were only able to add 3 to the total when the first wicket fell. However, LauraThorogood (25 not out) soon set about the Abberton bowlers with two massive sixes and a four to move the Woodham total on. V.Brown, H. Scrivener and D. Guppy were the only other bats to make a significant dent in the bowling.  A valiant effort by the Woodham bats but alas, not quite enough!

In a close game, Harwich bounced back from earlier poor performances to give Eight Ash Green a fright as the Green continue to maintain their unbeaten record.

After a delayed start due to a heavy storm, Eight Ash Green batted first on a very slow pitch. Openers Cheryl Pinch (28 retired) and Di Passfield (25 Retired scored steadily although the ball was not running through the wet outfield by so they both opted for the aerial route. Replaced by Rachel Cull (19) and Debbie Aylward (18), the rate slowed with the introduction of Sophie Southgate (15 for 0) and Michelle Mauger (16 for One) into the attack. Loosing their first wicket at 96 in the sixteenth over, 3 further wickets fell with a succession of run outs,  as the Green strived to push the score to 112.

In reply, Harwich got off to a good start with Carolyn Rowland (13) and Amy Cook (26 Retired) carefully accumulating runs mindful of previous collapses. Joined by Sophie Southgate (22), Cook continued to score steadily putting the home side in a strong position. Suzzi Brookes (17 not out)  then joined Southgate, who's stylish stroke play was not suited to the conditions, accelerated in the final overs only to be halted by the bowling of Chris Jones (15 for 0), Debbie Aylward (12 for One) and Cheryl Pinch (18 for One), falling 19 runs short after their 20 overs.

FRIDAY 8 JUNE 2007

Gt. Waltham 92 for 7 lost to Colchester & EE 96 for 1 by 9 wickets

On what was forecast to be a night of thunderstorms, Colchester won the toss and put Gt Waltham into bad on a warm and sunny evening in Chelmsford.

Gt Walthams openers Beckie Wilde(19) and Mary Shaw(25 retired) started scoring runs steadily, but the Colchester fielders were sharp and kept the runs down.  Once Wilde was bowled by Charlotte Mower (20 for One), Colchester made it difficult for rest of the Waltham batters to pick up runs.  Laura Parkin(9), Fran Johnson(8) and Rachel Harper(6) were the other top scorers.  Sue Davis(10 for Two) and Lorraine Hartley (12 for Two) were the pick of the Colchester bowlers. Harwich 15 all out lost to Woodham Mortimer 16 for 1 by 9 wickets

On a fine evening, Woodham Mortimer Ladies welcomed a sorely depleted Harwich team to their ground.  Having won the toss Woodham Mortimer asked the visitors to bat first.  Facing Woodham's opening bowlers, captain Sophie Southgate (1) and fellow opener Carole Rowland (4), took their place with determination. However, the steady attack of Holly Scrivener (5 for Three) and Victoria Brown (10 for Three) together with focused fielding, culminating in a classy run out, and 2 superbly rock solid catches from new girl Sam Morling, was too much for the visitors who crumbled to 15 all out.

Despite the tight bowling of Harwich, it only took Woodham Mortimer 5.2 overs to reach their target, with new girl Claire Ross(3 not out) and keeper Debbie Guppy(5 not out) taking the honors.
